DIM Things Premiere – Lena Fjortoft “Seeking Sophrosyne”

While times are uncertain, there’s one thing that everyone has; music. Whether you’re a music listener, music maker, or both, it’s one constant in all of our lives. It’s something we use every day whether it be to drown out the sadness or bring on the joy. It’s one thing that we know won’t go away. It may be a while before we all get to hug and high five at a gig, but that first gig we get to go to is going to be like rediscovering live music all over again. And in the meantime, we get these raw, stripped-down versions of our favorite bands recording in their living room, basement, or maybe even their closet (great acoustics in there).

This Friday, May 1st, Bandcamp is waiving all commission fees in order to give artists 100% of the profits to their music. So what better time for Spirit Lust to release their first compilation. The comp, titled Home is Where the Spirit Lies is a compilation of home recordings in direct support of all the Spirit Lust bands and associated bands, many of which have lost their forms of income. It features solo releases from each member of Should’ve and Otra Vez. The full lineup will include; Garçon no. 1Lena Fjortoft, Swear Tapes, Adam Sierz, Karaoke Mood Killer, Jimmy Montague, Dale Jr., Nadir Bliss, Abi Glass, Bat Kid, and Okon Transit.

Today, we shine the spotlight on Lena Fjortoft. Lena’s song, “Seeking Sophrosyne” will be featured on Home is Where The Spirit Lies. It’s hard to make a song sound joyful while also trying to not give up hope, but Lena nailed it. The song starts off with a twinkly guitar before Lena’s almost meditative voice fades in to sweep you off your feet. You find a beautiful harmony in the chorus with a little help from Dale Jr. who also lent a helping hand with production. Lena’s lyrics are poetically surreal and I must say, after going into an internet hole of what sophrosyne REALLY means, this track hit home.

Lena’s song and so many others will officially be released on Home is Where the Spirit Lies via Bandcamp this Friday. Spirit Lust has a great roster and has put together an absolutely beautiful comp. If you have the means, please consider supporting these amazing artists in these uncertain times. Stay safe in there.
