Sonic Baptism with Spirit Lust and Friends 03/05/20

Welcome to Sonic Baptism with Spirit Lust and friends. Dim Things graciously gave me a platform to share my favorite recent releases and shows of the week. For a playlist of all the songs, and artist mentioned in the weeks article follow here(also includes our friends and releases). This week we’ve been slammed with our own releases. Both Spirit Lust and DIM Things had a record release show last night for Bipolar and Otra Vez. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to write about our favorite new releases. Below we are sharing both our recent releases with full streams to the albums. While we didn’t have to do write ups, we’ve been stockpiling sick music for your ears for next week. Next week we will be back bigger and better than ever. Thank you all for your support! Without further interruption Sonic Baptism, this week with Jacob Saxton.

It only takes one listen to Bipolar’s debut EP 1-(800)-CALL-ICE to know that they are a band to keep up with. They hold nothing back from start to finish on this four-song ripper of an EP. The only thing that can top these songs is their live performance – which is something you should not miss out on.

The first track, “Depression” starts off with that slow-burning synth – making you wonder where it’s all about to go. Then BAM the rest of the band kicks in and you just know it’s going to be good. The synths accent the driving guitar perfectly as the bass rumbles and makes you rock your head uncontrollably. Even if you miraculously find some way to not like this song, you can always thank Bipolar for giving you a way to never forget how to spell depression “ D E P R E S S I O N. “

We at DIM Things are so happy to release this EP and now that you have a taste, make your way over their bandcamp and listen to the whole thing over and over and then see them live and buy a tape – or snag one online here.

Otra Vez is a brand new band to the Brooklyn scene. With only a handful of live performances, they have been providing the scene with a fresh take of lo-fi psyche pop. This album is chock full of earworms with catchy riffs and choruses that will not get out of your head. Fronted by both Sean O’hara and DJ O’loane, these two have implemented themselves head first into the underground diy scene. They’re both from the south but met up here6 months ago and have been inseparable from each other.

It’s really hard to choose a favorite song from this record because every song has such a unique magnetic force to it. Each song compliments the previous song and leads into the next with such subtlety in the most perfect way possible. “Fat Sandwich” and “Death By 1000 Cuts” are strong contenders for the greatest lo-fi pop songs of the 2020 decade.

Recorded straight to cassette, with heavy influences from Pavement, Big Star, Built to Spill and Sparkle Horse theres nothing not to love about Vexation. Pick up a cassette from us at Spirit Lust and catch these wild boys at their next set.

So stoked I was able to release this! thank you my dudes!!
